Kerbs separate the carriageway from footways and central reserves, and at the same time guide surface water towards discharge points.
Concrete kerbs are either precast or cast in place with a slipform machine. Slipform work offers advantages in both speed and surface regularity on long stretches. Asphalt kerb, which can be applied directly onto existing surfacing, provides a fast solution particularly on roads already in service.
Surface cleaning and the bond coat applied beforehand determine the adhesion between the pavement and the kerb.
